Do anti-aging creams work? The best anti-aging ingredients

Consumers spend more and more money each year on anti-aging cream products. These creams promise the same anti-wrinkle, anti-sagging, and anti-aging results as some of the wrinkle filling injections such as Botox, Juva Derm, or Restalyne.

The bottom line is that if these creams could accomplish the same thing as a medical procedure, they would be drugs and not cosmetics, and that’s what you need to consider when deciding whether to try or buy, “says Marsha Gordon, MD, Vice President of Dermatology at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City.

There is not enough evidence to show whether lotions, creams, or vitamin supplements reduce wrinkles or slow aging. However, some of the ingredients used in anti-aging products have been shown to be safe and effective. When looking for an anti-aging cream, look for one that contains small molecules like alpha-hydroxy acids, allantoin, retinol, and hyaluronic acid. This is because the high molecule ingredients do not produce results because they cannot penetrate the cells that are in the outer layer of our skin.

Alpha-hydroxy acids

These natural ingredients are found in fruits and sugars in milk. Alpha-hydroxy acids include lactic, glycolic, and citric acids. They are used in creams as exfoliants, to remove dead skin and allow new cells to grow. They allow the deeper layers of the skin to come to the surface much faster.

Each acid has different effects. Glycolic acid (found in sugar canes) reduces lines and wrinkles in the skin, leaving it smoother and smoother like velvet, while lactic acid (found in sour milk) removes dead skin leaving it with healthy and glowing skin.

Retinol

Retinol is the natural form of vitamin A. Vitamin A has been shown to slow aging by reducing wrinkles and increasing the thickness and elasticity of the skin. However, it is not advisable for pregnant women or women planning to become pregnant to buy any products with this ingredient as it can increase the risks of infant defects.

Hyaluronic acid

Acid is a gel-like water retention molecule found in every part of our body. HA cushions joints, nerves, hydrates skin and hair, and fills eyes. It is estimated that by the time we reach 40 years of age, the levels of HA produced by the body are about half of what the body requires. Buying creams with this ingredient will increase HA levels in our aging bodies, making it beneficial for the skin, joints, and eyes. Other benefits of HA include faster wound healing, relief of dry skin, increased mental alertness, and improved muscle strength.

Allantoin

This nitrogenous compound comes from the herb called comfrey which is mainly found in the UK. The compound helps protect, soothe and soften the skin. It acts as an inflammatory stimulant and cell regeneration.

Other ingredients that have been shown to have high levels of the anti-inflammatory agent include snail slime and seaweed. However, don’t be fooled by creams with high levels of stem cells. This is a deception because stem cells are delicate and wither within minutes of leaving the body.

Depending on the ingredients that are in the anti-aging cream, you may see changes in your skin after a couple of weeks of using the cream. The ingredients mentioned will help prevent lines, wrinkles, and acne. They also help soothe irritated skin, remove dry body cells, and leave the user with beautiful, firm, and radiant skin.
